Toyota has announced that it is boosting its planned investment for a new electric vehicle battery plant in the United States. Previously, the Japanese automaker was looking to invest $1.29 billion. This number has now been raised to $3.8 billion.

The automaker noted on Wednesday that its larger investment is partly a response to the increasing demand for electric vehicles. This is quite interesting as Jack Hollis, Toyota Motor North America’s executive vice president of sales, just recently stated that the US’ 50% EV goal for 2030 is a long shot due to lack of consumer demand.
